Stars in the Eyes of Hundreds of Children

More than 1,000 children—students from local schools as well as many young athletes from Ski Valais—attended the second training session for the Crans-Montana downhill race this morning. They left with unforgettable memories, emotions, and images in their minds, while the skiers enjoyed a fantastic and welcoming atmosphere.

Training sessions in the World Cup circuit often take place in relative anonymity. But this Friday, it was quite the opposite at the bottom of the Nationale slope, where more than 1,000 spectators filled the main grandstand to cheer on the world’s best downhill skiers. "You can really see that people here are passionate about skiing and want to share this incredible moment that Swiss skiing is experiencing right now," said a delighted Justin Murisier, who was thrilled to compete in a World Cup event in Valais for the first time in his career. "All these young kids have stars in their eyes—it’s really special."

The organizers had the great idea of inviting around 800 students from local schools, as well as many young talents from Ski Valais. More than 1,000 children excitedly watched as the heroes of the Saalbach World Championships raced down the course—before rushing to get photos and autographs. "This event provides a unique opportunity for our young athletes and ski enthusiasts to be close to the world’s elite, observe top-level skiers, and immerse themselves in the World Cup experience," said Marine Héritier, Director of Ski Valais. "It’s an enriching experience that contributes to both their athletic training and personal development."

The Ski Stars Play Along

Switzerland’s top skiers—especially Marco Odermatt and Franjo von Allmen, whose popularity has skyrocketed in recent weeks—delighted both young and old by engaging with the fans. "I didn’t expect to see so many people here today," admitted the newly crowned downhill world champion from Bern. "It’s incredibly beautiful to see. It’s not always a given that so many people want to share this moment with us, which makes it even more rewarding." International athletes also played along, equally surprised to see such a large crowd at a training session.

"It’s amazing to see them in real life—there are no words to describe the emotions you feel, it’s truly heartwarming," said Anna Claire, a young skier from Crans-Montana. "Knowing they stand on podiums and being able to take pictures with them is just incredible. I was lucky enough to meet Franjo von Allmen—it was amazing!" added Lana.

"Given the overwhelming success of this event, we will definitely continue this initiative in the coming years," confirmed Sophie Clivaz, head of communications for the World Cup races. And for anyone who still had doubts—skiing is well and truly back home!
