Riding the unshakable confidence currently driving the Swiss speed team, Marco Odermatt and Alexis Monney secured another 1-2 finish on Sunday in the super-G on the Nationale slope. Reactions.
"It's incredible, it just keeps going!" Marco Odermatt summed up yet another sensational day for Swiss skiing. With an outstanding run, the Nidwalden skier claimed his 45th World Cup victory in the super-G in Crans-Montana. Once again, he edged out a fellow countryman, this time Alexis Monney, while Italian Dominik Paris finished third. Having already stood on the podium the previous day in the downhill behind Franjo von Allmen, the two Swiss skiers can look back on a near-perfect weekend in front of a passionate and electric French-speaking Swiss crowd!
"We have to enjoy these moments, it’s just amazing to win here," said “Odi”, the national hero. "It was a fantastic first World Cup weekend here in Crans-Montana. There were so many fans, and I’m excited to see everything step up even further for the World Championships."
The same excitement was felt by Alexis Monney, who is still riding the high of his double medal win at the World Championships in Saalbach. "I have no words. To stand on the podium twice in French-speaking Switzerland after the World Championships is just incredible. The atmosphere is crazy—I’m loving it!"
Looking ahead to the 2027 World Championships
The two Swiss champions are particularly thrilled to have made such a strong debut on the Nationale slope, which will host the World Championships in two years' time. "They’re already in the back of my mind, and it’s great to know I can win here," confirmed Marco Odermatt. "That said, a lot will be different in two years. The snow in early February will likely be different, as the conditions should be more wintry."
New rivals may also emerge. "A lot can happen in two years," added the skier from Buochs. "Who would have thought two years ago that Franjo (von Allmen) and Alexis (Monney) would now be among the top three downhill skiers in the world?"
Alexis Monney remains equally cautious. "We have to be careful because things can change quickly, and we have to keep working hard," he insisted. At the beginning of the week, he wasn’t even sure the Nationale slope would suit him. "When I first saw the course, I thought it wouldn’t really be for me," he admitted. "But today, I had an amazing time on my skis again. It was just incredible."
Now, the skiers will enjoy a brief moment of calm before heading into the final stretch of the World Cup season, with races in Kvitfjell and Sun Valley (while the technical specialists will also compete in Kranjska Gora and Hafjell).
